Increasing efficiency with encounter traffic

Together with Daimler Truck and the software provider Mansio from Aachen, we converted a round trip from Mannheim to Krostitz near Leipzig to an intermodal service at the end of April. The changeover has several advantages: the truck is no longer tied up in long-distance transport for two days, but returns on the same day. This means that a second or even third shift is possible afterwards, which significantly increases vehicle efficiency. The driver is also back home in the evening. This makes the job more attractive and is a further incentive to work for Logistik Schmitt.

There with vehicle parts, back with empty load carriers

The round trip from the Daimler Buses site in Mannheim to a supplier in Krostitz, Saxony, covers almost 1,000 kilometers. Previously, we completed the entire route ourselves. Since April 22, a partner forwarding company has now come into play. The pilot project is as follows: One articulated truck from our company and one from the partner forwarding company drive towards each other from the start and destination respectively. At an agreed meeting point, they swap trailers and start their return journey with the trailer they have taken over. One driver pulls a trailer with full load carriers, the other one with empty load carriers. The depot of a logistics company located directly on the route, on the A5 in Alsfeld, serves as the meeting point for the meeting traffic. The entire process is controlled via the Mansio platform, which is also used to exchange all information and necessary transport documents. Incidentally, there will be another innovation on this line in July: Instead of a diesel truck, an electric truck will then be used on it.
